Tell us about a project or accomplishments from the past 10 years that had a major impact on your life or career.
I’ve worked at two agencies, and the friendships I’ve made both at work and around the community have had an amazing impact on my life. I’m so beyond grateful for all the amazing, creative people in my life.
What is your favorite color, and why?
Unlike a lot of people I’ve talked to, I’m a HUGE sucker for the color orange. Pretty much any vibrant, warm color is a go-to for me.
What keeps you going when you’re focused on a project? Is there a particular saying or song that gets you moving?
When I really want to get hyped about a project, I turn on some St. Vincent and put my headphones up to a concerning volume.
What’s your superpower, or one you wish you had?
I have an unwavering amount of optimism that has gotten me through some rough times and has annoyed any pessimist I’ve come in contact with.
What design or career advice would you give to your younger self?
No one is allowed to treat you poorly just because you’re young. You deserve any opportunity that comes your way.
If you were given the opportunity to see into the future, what would you want to know?
I think I like the idea of it being a surprise. No spoilers
How do you think design impacts your everyday life? The community?
Everything we interact with is designed by someone. That’s a super important responsibility. If we’re in charge of how the world looks, we better make it look pretty dang cool.
If you hadn’t ended up in the career you are in, what do you think you’d be doing?
I would LOVE to be a florist or at least some sort of job where I’m surrounded by plants everyday.
Attend Shelby’s breakout panel “(Not So) Starving Artist” on Sunday, October 13 at the PHXDW Evolve Design Conference.
