Get to know John

Tell us about a project or accomplishments from the past 10 years that had a major impact on your life or career.
I ran my own design business for 12 years. I did work for an international toy brand and even designed a patented toy package. Independence allowed me the freedom to learn a variety of design disciplines to always keep it fresh. And I had fun doing it.

What is your favorite color, and why?
Pantone Cool Gray 10. It’s just so gooooood.

What keeps you going when you’re focused on a project? Is there a particular saying or song that gets you moving?
Most projects I start usually get a soundtrack. I’ll make a playlist, listen to one album, or even play the same song on repeat for like, 5 hours. Sometimes the music reflects the brand I’m working for. Sometimes it’s just something to keep me awake and on fire.

What’s your superpower, or one you wish you had?
My superpower is empathy.

What design or career advice would you give to your younger self?
Make some more friends who do this stuff.

If you were given the opportunity to see into the future, what would you want to know?
As our planet gets warmer, are we really still going to be able to live in Phoenix in 20 years?

How do you think design impacts your everyday life? The community?
The made world is all around us. Like it or not, as we move throughout time and space, our ability to do so is usually either aided or hindered by the design decisions of others.

If you hadn’t ended up in the career you are in, what do you think you’d be doing?
International Yo-Yo Performer.

Attend John’s breakout presentation “Design Systems: Designing Digital Products at Scale” on Sunday, October 13 at the PHXDW Evolve Design Conference.
