Pierson has made a name for himself as two times as a best-selling author and public speaker to the creative community on how to evolve their design practice into a scalable business.

Tell us about a project or accomplishments from the past 10 years that had a major impact on your life or career.
Getting a mentor was a pivotal moment in my career. I hired the most experienced agency owner I could find to mentor me, and our work together changed my perspective on how I approached growing my agency. If you want to be better, you need to be around the best.

What is your favorite color, and why?
I love all the colors.

What keeps you going when you’re focused on a project? Is there a particular saying or song that gets you moving?
FOCUS: Follow One Course Until Success.

What’s your superpower, or one you wish you had?
I cast visions that inspire others.

What design or career advice would you give to your younger self?
Don’t go to college. Intern with an expert/mentor/agency. Get real-life experience working on projects vs. grades. It’s all about your experience and talent.

How do you think design impacts your everyday life? The community?
Design is everything. From the moment I wake up and go to sleep, I’m designing my day, interactions, interpretations, relationships, and my life. To me, the idea of design is the ultimate intentional manifestation and realization a human being can have. The fact is that everyone does it, but some have no idea. If you’re able to produce a thought, you’re actually designing. You’re designing your life. 

If you hadn’t ended up in the career you are in, what do you think you’d be doing?
I’d probably be an OBR (On Board Reporter) for Volvo Ocean Race, sailing around the world creating killer content. I’ve always wanted to do it, but I can’t afford to be on a boat for months on end without my family.
