FORWARD – GAME OF CREATIVE ADVANCEMENT

Greetings!

To me, “FORWARD” is a great metaphor for the personal journey all of us creatives are faced with – the challenges, the joys and the setbacks. We all approach this journey differently and as a local community, we can help each other to succeed. Wouldn’t it be great to capture this idea somehow?

Well, I’m excited to present this 100% original poster concept which includes FORWARD as a creative expression, an over-arching message and complete (tested) game play functionality. All rolled into one complete package with instructions too. (At your request, I can provide a larger sample for viewing.)

I think it would be great for visitors to take away something they can enjoy for it’s geometric design aesthetic and/or for the game play functionality which can serve to connect them with other creatives in a social setting. I hope you find this a fitting representation of this year’s theme.

Put Your Best Design FORWARD

When I started thinking about FORWARD, I started thinking about the past and how far we’ve come: the technologies, the skills, the knowledge. Of course, I thought about how far I’ve come personally as well. And through moves, job changes, friendships made and lost, the one constant has been my trusty sneakers. So it seemd fitting to design a poster that reflects my personal thought about FORWARD. Looking into the past to find the future.

Using the idea of “Forward” as a bit of inspiration, I reflected on what it means to move forward in life in general. Using some daft punk as a bit of inspiration, I used “Harder Better Faster Stronger” to relate to moving forward.

Wanting to push forward with Phoenix becoming a recognized design center; I chose to focus on the uniqueness of the place. One of the most unique and dramatic elements of the Phoenix landscape is the tall Saguaro Cactus, often found standing on its own against the backdrop of dusty Arizona hills. For my poster, i played with the letters (Phoenix Design Week 2010) to recreate what Phoenix Design week is – a lonely yet beautiful Design Week in the middle of nowhere!

The focus of my design is the diagonal line, which challenges perception by ironically writing the letters (forward) in reverse. Using angles usually found in constructivist style design; the finished poster is dramatic, clean, with a sense of playful direction.
