The Madness and Method of Social Design

Cheryl Heller

9:15 a.m.

There is no longer a need to convince people that our country, our world, our species is heading for the deep end of the pool with no idea how to swim there. What can design do? What should design do? How can designers have a career, happiness, money and stability while contributing to the health of society and the planet rather than destroying them?  And oh yes, how can we be sure design can do that?  Cheryl Heller presents the big picture of the practice of social design, the opportunities it offers for fulfillment, and how to be a part of it.

Inclusive design focuses on the impact understanding user diversity makes to informing these decisions, and helps us design experiences that are inclusive to as many people as possible. In this panel we’ll discuss what it takes to design the inclusive experiences of tomorrow, and the diverse teams it’ll take to build them.

Welcome back to another day of Method + Madness 2017 from emcee Marc Oxborrow.

Closing the Diversity Gap in Design Disciplines

Jacinda Walker

9:15 a.m.

The lack of diversity in design is not a new problem. Scholars, employers, organizations, and design professionals have been documenting it for more than 50 years, but the problem still exists. Representation of people of color in the profession hasn’t significantly increased in over ten years. Culturally insensitive advertising and messaging are on the rise. And diversity-building initiatives are at a minimum. What is the problem causing this disparity? Come listen as Jacinda Walker, founder of designExplorr, explains the problem causing the lack of diversity in design, shares the need for more design career resources, and outlines strategic solutions to close the diversity gap in design disciplines.

Design consistency, craft, efficiency, and cat memes

Designing products and websites that meet business goals and user needs can often be a challenging and stressful endeavor. Time is short, budgets are limited, and consensus can be hard to reach. For most designers, craft is also extremely important – and it can be frustrating to have a project marked as “complete” when you feel like you could have put more love and time into it.

We deal with this scenario every day at Tallwave, and we’ve learned to try and leverage a combination of tools and process to help us both meet business needs and fulfill our inner designer obsessiveness. Come hang out and I’ll talk about what we use to keep us from going bonkers:

  • Tools like Sketch, Abstract, Invision, and Zeplin
  • Processes like design collaboration, version control, sprint planning
  • Artifacts like UI kits and cat memes

Not all projects go as smoothly as they did on paper. Sometimes your client is really easy to work for, sometimes they turn out to be a dark Jedi with chest cold. It’s not the end of the world. You can still save the galaxy and your project by making small pivots, building a team of specialists to get the job done, and by getting involved with the local community and making friends with other rebels.
