Ironworks is a monthly meetup for self-employed creatives in the metro Phoenix area. As iron sharpens iron, Ironworks was created as a way to bring self-employed creatives together over breakfast to learn from and be inspired by one another. There’s no speaker or agenda, just a casual meal with like-minded individuals.
For this special meetup, we’re celebrating Phoenix Design Week! In order to accommodate more people, this meetup will be more of a mixer-style format, instead of our traditional sit-down breakfast. Coffee and breakfast treats will be provided by Distill Mill and Strong Design.
Creatives of all kinds are welcome—designers, developers, marketers, photographers, illustrators, writers, videographers, artists, or makers of any kind. We’re an open-minded bunch, so whether you’re fully self-employed, moonlighting after hours, are interested in becoming self-employed, or just like hanging out with freelance creatives, we’d love for you to join us.
Make sure to RSVP so that we can get an accurate count for food and beverages—reservations will close at 12pm the day before the event. Hope to see you there!
Join Ladies That UX Phoenix during Phoenix Design Week for an evening of great fun at Tallwave in Scottsdale. We’ll be welcoming Jody Miller, Senior Director, Office of Experience Design, at University of Phoenix. She has been with the organization for over 10 years and really knows her stuff when it comes to the student experience! More details to come on her talk.
Snacks and drinks will be provided! This is a free event.
About our speaker
Jody Miller joined the University of Phoenix (UOPX) in 2007 as the Product Manager for the University website and has held key management positons within the organization, becoming the Vice President of Website Strategy and Operations in 2013.
Jody’s passion for education, along with the combination of her marketing and technology skills allowed her to continue to expand her focus on design within the fast-paced environment of UOPX and in 2014 she founded the first Office of Experience design in Higher Education under the University Provost. The focus of the Experience Design Office is analyzing the student journey, researching and testing student needs in the in-house UX lab and working to define the entire student experience from interest to commencement.
Jody’s connection to education has always been a strong one. Prior to joining the University she worked for a digital and telephony certification company that held industry leading certifications. She held multiple roles within the organization ranging from managing web development and product marketing to directing SEO, PR and marketing communications.
Throughout her 18 years in digital learning Jody realized that in every sense, a company focused on education must fulfill the promise it makes to its students. Learning is more than just going to class, completing assignments and taking tests. Learning also means providing a thoughtful and rich classroom experience and an environment that allows knowledge to flourish. This promise, coupled with analytics, experience data and user research, along with a strong focus on student needs, help deliver constant improvement in positive learning outcomes. It is this that drives Jody each and every day.
Jody holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing from the University of Montana and holds certifications in digital multimedia and web design.

Ever wanted to print your own poster art? Create beautiful, limited edition screen prints with your own two hands and break the constraints of the digital world? This demo/workshop presented by Jon Arvizu will cover the basics of screen printing including the proper materials, methods and techniques for stenciling, color separation, mixing inks and the mechanics of the printing process. Best of all, you’ll get a chance to pull your own print of a poster designed by Jon for the event.
What is Screenprinting?
In this process, ink is applied directly onto a mesh screen and pushed through with a squeegee in order to produce a work of layered art or design on a piece of paper beneath the screen. All of the work created is original and this method of printmaking works perfectly for multiple editions.

This workshop is for beginners with little to no formal experience with screenprinting. Intermediate screenprinters are also welcome to attend. Class fee includes registration, all the tools you’ll need, and light appetizers. Class starts promptly at 6:00pm and is limited to only 20 attendees, register now, this will fill up fast.

Our Boot Camp will suit you up, shape you up, and develop muscles you never knew you had using your brand new calligraphy kit!
In this two-day hands-on workshop, you’ll build up the muscle memory while learning five different calligraphy styles that will help take your hand lettering skills to the next level. You’ll emerge with a better understanding of both historical and contemporary letterforms, deepening your appreciation for the evolution of the western alphabet.
Day 1 will introduce your new toolkit while learning Uncial and Blackletter style calligraphy; Day 2 continues with Brush Script, Modern Script with Pointed Pen and Folded Pen.
This workshop is for beginners with little to no formal experience with calligraphy. Intermediate lettering artists are also welcome to attend.
